Grimmer Court Unveiled
There was once again a sea of red in Campus Center, this time during the Men’s Basketball team’s season opener against visiting RPI, as the Kevin Grimmer Court logo was officially unveiled. This comes a few months after an official court dedication ceremony was held during Alumni Weekend. Grimmer, a longtime coach and athletic director at SUNY Poly, was a local legend, both on campus and in the Mohawk Valley.
Members of Grimmer’s family stood by the logo on the court, in what was a truly historic moment. A moment of silence was held prior to tip-off, on what was a solemn night, as the legendary figure lost his battle with ALS a week prior. His presence was certainly felt on the night, helping to will the Wildcats to an impressive 59-56 victory over RPI.
The court and a fund established in his name, that provides support to SUNY Poly student-athletes ensures that his legacy at our university will live on in perpetuity.
In addition to having a positive impact on the thousands of student-athletes he coached, Grimmer contributed to several significant upgrades to the university’s athletics program. This included overseeing the planning and construction of the $20 million Wildcat Field House, a turf field with lights, new baseball field and improved softball field, as well as assisting with the planning of the upcoming $25 million renovation project at the Campus Center prior to his retirement. He is also responsible for adding the sports of men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, and women’s soccer while shaping the SUNY Poly athletics program, which now has a roster of 13 NCAA sports.
Our hearts continue to go out to the Grimmer family, and all of the student-athletes, coaches, colleagues and friends whose lives he touched. He will truly be missed!
