Foundation Board Member Spotlight: Scott McCartney
“To borrow a phrase from the legendary investor Warren Buffett, I tap dance to work—at least most days!”

Scott McCartney’s passion for finance, education, and community engagement is evident in both his professional career and his philanthropic endeavors. As one of the three co-founders of Ascent Wealth Partners, Scott has dedicated himself to guiding individuals, businesses, and endowments toward financial success. Founded in 2011, Ascent Wealth Partners has grown into an independent investment advisory firm with principal offices in New Hartford, Saratoga Springs, and Elmira, New York, managing over $1.3 billion in client assets.
“My principal role involves providing planning and investment advice to individuals, businesses, and endowments,” Scott explains. “I have been a long-time student of the markets—as any investor knows, they teach us things every day.”
In 2017, Scott joined the SUNY Poly Foundation Board, motivated by a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of education.
“I was lucky to be raised in a very pro-education family. My parents encouraged reading and critical thinking and emphasized education’s important role in shaping a person and making them career-ready,” Scott reflects. “In this portion of my life and career, I am trying to pay it forward by supporting SUNY Poly in meaningful ways.”
His commitment to SUNY Polytechnic Institute is anchored in his appreciation for its community impact and educational excellence.
“It’s great that we have an institution of excellence right in our backyard. Our local colleges and universities are a critical part of the community’s fabric,” Scott says. “SUNY Poly has been a dynamic place that I’ve been proud to serve. With strong leadership under Dr. Soboyejo, dedicated corporate partners, a growing donor base, and faculty and staff who are committed to advancing the school’s academic and research missions, SUNY Poly continues to thrive.”
What truly sets SUNY Poly apart for Scott is its student-centered approach.
“I’ve consistently seen campus leadership that is deeply committed to the success of its students,” he notes. “The Foundation’s primary mission is to steward and grow investment funds for student scholarships. But it doesn’t stop there. There’s real thoughtfulness in supporting students beyond academics—whether that’s through short-term emergency loans, job interview preparation, or even help with groceries. It’s about meeting students where they are and giving them every opportunity to succeed.”
Scott’s belief in SUNY Poly’s mission is reinforced by the impact he sees on the community and the potential for future growth.
“SUNY Poly is a community gem that has been there for generations of graduates, many of whom are now prominent in healthcare, computer labs, and other local industries,” he shares. “What excites me most is the shared mission I see every day—let’s make it even better!”
With his expertise in financial planning and his dedication to educational advancement, Scott McCartney continues to play a vital role in supporting SUNY Poly’s students and its broader mission, helping to ensure that future generations have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
