Honoring Anita Brown

SUNY Poly and the Mohawk Valley lost a champion in December, as longtime Foundation board member and alum Anita Brown passed away. Having served on the Foundation Board (as a member and past president) since 2004, Anita was always present to offer incredible insight, inspiring ideas and a thoughtful perspective, assisting in a variety of ways. This includes leading the board and the university’s development team through several leadership transitions, ensuring that students remained the focus of each initiative.

It is for these reasons that the Foundation has taken steps to make sure Anita’s invaluable contributions are remembered in perpetuity, through the establishment of the Anita Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund will help ease the financial burdens faced by current and future SUNY Poly students, allowing them to put their full focus on their studies in the classroom, and ultimately be one step closer to achieving their dreams.

Dedicated to her community

Anita was well-known in our greater community as someone who advocated for other females through mentoring and professional development. She worked in the marketing field for over 30 years at businesses ranging from banking to not-for-profit to manufacturing.

Recently retired, Anita spent the last 18 years of her career working at Indium Corporation, rising to the role as Associate Director for Marketing Communications.  She was also an active volunteer in the community for most of her life, taking on leadership roles with organizations such as the SUNY Poly Foundation, NYCREATES, the YWCA, Rotary International, The House of Good Shepherd, and the United Way.  She also participated in the Ride for Missing Children for 10 years.

Anita was recognized by the YWCA with the Salute to Outstanding Women’s Business and Industry Award, the Dean’s Award from the SUNY Poly School of Business, the Women in Business Award from the Mohawk Valley Business Journal, the Follow the Leader Award from Leadership Mohawk Valley, and was a three-time Paul Harris Fellow (Rotary).

Our thoughts continue to be with her family, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives she touched.
