Study Published in Transportation Research Record Journal
SUNY Poly Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Technology, Dr. Asif Ahmed, and peers have published research in the Transportation Research Record Journal titled, “Investigation of Non-Equilibrium and Dynamic Behavior of Soil Water Characteristic Curves through Field Monitoring.” The findings of the study are significant as they could offer valuable insights to soil scientists, geotechnical engineers, and hydrologists, enabling them to gain a better understanding of soil behavior in varying climatic conditions and adapt their designs accordingly.
The Soil Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) holds significant importance in soil analysis. In this research, SWCC curves were generated by concurrently measuring soil water content and suction values in the field. The primary aim of this investigation was to assess whether real-time field monitoring could capture the diverse SWCC trends observed in different seasons. While conventional laboratory methods yield static SWCC data, their research revealed that field observations offer a dynamic nature of SWCC, with values responsive to changes in climate.
