As members of SUNY Poly\u2019s Class of 1976 prepare to return to campus this September for Wildcat Homecoming Weekend and their 50th Reunion celebration, alumnus Jim Galligan reflects on a journey that began in the early days of SUNY Poly (or what was then Upper Division College at Herkimer\/Rome\/Utica) and led to a distinguished global career spanning nearly five decades in international shipping and logistics. From helping build student life at a young institution to leading operations across Asia and North America, Galligan\u2019s story is one of adaptability, leadership, and lasting connections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Galligan\u2019s path to the Mohawk Valley began at Nassau Community College, where he earned an associate degree in marketing while attending classes at night and working during the day. Looking to continue his education in business, he was drawn to the Upper Division College\u2019s curriculum, which offered a strong foundation in finance, accounting, economics, and management. Just as importantly, the school\u2019s transfer-focused environment appealed to him. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\u201cEveryone was starting fresh,\u201d Galligan recalled. \u201cWe were all in the same boat.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That sense of shared experience helped define his college years. Although the campus looked very different from today\u2019s SUNY Poly, Galligan remembers it as a place filled with opportunity. Classes were held in renovated downtown buildings, and the institution was still developing many of the traditions and organizations students now take for granted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Creating a Campus Community<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Rather than simply participating in campus life, Galligan and his classmates helped create it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n As the college worked to build a student experience beyond the classroom, Galligan was among a group of students who helped organize several early clubs and activities, including the Business Club, Marketing Club, Outdoor Club, and Intramural Club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking back, Galligan sees those efforts as an important part of the college experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe really started to make a lot of friends that way,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of the camaraderie came out of the intramural club.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n His classroom experience was equally influential. Many professors were experienced business professionals who brought decades of real-world knowledge into their teaching. Rather than focusing solely on textbooks, they shared practical lessons drawn from careers in management, finance, economics, and industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey were businessmen who came over to teach,\u201d Galligan said. \u201cWe got a lot more hands-on information about the topics they were bringing to us.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Those lessons proved invaluable after graduation. <\/p>\n\n\n A Career Without Borders<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Galligan began his career with Burroughs Corporation before a chance meeting at a wedding introduced him to the shipping industry. In 1978, he joined U.S. Lines, one of America\u2019s historic shipping companies, where he quickly developed expertise in international trade and transportation. What followed was a career defined by growth, opportunity, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Over the years, Galligan held leadership positions throughout the United States and around the world. His work took him from New York to Virginia, then to Hong Kong and Tokyo, where he managed operations and sales efforts across Asia. Following the bankruptcy of U.S. Lines in 1986, he joined Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), a move that would shape the next four decades of his professional life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n At MOL, Galligan steadily rose through the ranks, becoming the first American to serve as Vice President of Marketing for the company. His responsibilities expanded to include overseeing major trade lanes, directing international sales organizations, managing regulatory affairs, and helping shape business strategy for one of the world\u2019s largest transportation and logistics companies. Throughout his career, he worked across multiple continents and played a key role in navigating the increasingly interconnected global economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, nearly 40 years after joining MOL, Galligan serves as Senior Advisor to the CEO, focusing on strategy, organizational development, and mentoring future leaders. It is a role that allows him to draw on decades of experience while helping guide the next generation of professionals entering the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n For Galligan, one of the defining lessons of his career has been the importance of relationships. Whether building friendships with classmates in Utica, working with colleagues across cultures and continents, or leading teams around the world, success has always been rooted in connecting with people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n As the Class of 1976 celebrates its 50th Reunion during Wildcat Homecoming Weekend, Galligan\u2019s story stands as a testament to the impact of a SUNY Poly education. The broad-based business foundation he received, combined with the leadership opportunities and friendships forged during those formative years, helped prepare him for a career that would span the globe.
